How to Pick the Best Diamond Pad for Natural Stone & Quartz
Selecting the right diamond polishing pad is the necessary to achieving the best polishing results & getting most return from your investment.
There are many different types, brands and a broad price range for diamond polishing pads in today’s marketplace which can make for an indecisive purchasing process.
Choosing the right diamond polishing pad should start with your specific material application.
- Are you polishing with water or do you need a dry pad?
- Do you need to consolidate steps to reduce labor time, but don’t want to sacrifice the finished polished result?
- Do you specify polishing pads for a specific material application or do you need a good multi-purpose pad for numerous materials?
See a range of variables below to assist selecting the right polishing pad for the job.
Size
Larger diameter pads, like 5″ & 7″ more stable on larger, flat areas than smaller sized pads, like 3″ & 4″. However, larger sized diamond pads become more unstable on smaller slabs of natural stone. For example, a 7″ diameter pad won’t stay flat on a 3″ to 4″ wide sink vanity.
Small diameter pads are less efficient when polishing larger slabs utilizing a big polisher, but with a smaller air polisher, they work very well for processing profiles, edges & narrow slabs & sink vanities.
The 4″ size pad is the best all purpose diameter. There is a vast selection of 4″ diamond pads for different applications, designs and price points on the market.
Thickness
Diamond polishing pads for natural stone & quartz come in a variety of thicknesses. Normally, from 2.5mm to 4mm thick.
Thicker pads will last longer, but thicker pads are usually more rigid and less flexible.
Thinner pads don’t last as long (especially when aggressively cutting), but they are more flexible. This is a big advantage when honing or polishing inside curved integral sinks.
Pattern
The resin pattern molded into the diamond polishing surface can deliver increased polishing speeds, higher gloss meter results & improved longevity.
Many pads used for coarse polishing & honing (30/40 grit) have an aggressive, open pattern with wide and deeper slots.. Pads with large, open slots allow the slurry to be removed efficiently. Removal of slurry will increase the longevity of polishing pads by preventing premature wear.
Pads with a narrow slot design are optimal for polishing (200 to 3000 grit).
A more narrow, slotted resin design, enables pad flexibility to more efficiently polishing edges, convex & concave profiles. And delivers more diamond surface to be in contact with the stone material thereby increasing polishing speeds & luster.
Diamond Quality
The optimal pad type, size & design still needs the main ingredient for success – professional quality diamonds. Ultimately it’s the diamonds that do the honing & polishing. Higher quality of diamonds will achieve faster polishing rates on a wider range of materials & will deliver the best return of your investment in longevity.
Less expensive pads use lower grade diamonds
Economy priced pads will have lower quality diamond & decreased concentration resulting in a dull finish & short life.
Bond
The bond utilized for the diamond matrix also has a significant on polishing performance & pad longevity. Bonding materials include resin, metal grit & ceramic to name a few. The “bond hardness” also determines polishing speed & longevity. The softer the bond, the faster the polish AND the shorter the pad’s life will be. The harder the bond, the slower the polishing rate AND the longer the pad’s life will be.
For example, a ceramic bonded matrix utilized on dry pads will wear longer & withstand higher temperatures than just resin bonded pads. Ceramic bonds also prevent resin smearing & glazing that may occur when a resin bonded dry pad overheats. Also, running pads at too high an RPM speed can cause overheating, smearing, glazing & shortened life.
Conclusion
Stone Tool Shop can assist you to help navigate our diamond polishing pads to achieve the best combination of high luster, fast polishing rates, application versatility & increased longevity!
